Sungai Tiram

Sungai Tiram (ex. Jalan Kaca) is one of the slum area in North Jakarta. Located between Ancol, Sunter and Tanjung Priok. Sungai Tiram is included in Papanggo prefecture. There are approximately 1000 families in this area. Most of the men are working as informal workers such as road sweeper, washer, and water seller but there are many of them who are unemployed. Few housewives open small shops (warung) in their houses to earn extra income.

Most of the people are immigrants and settled illegally, thus government can take their land at any time. Most buildings in Jalan kaca are semi-permanent made from wood, but there are also some permanent buildings there.

Demography of the people :

- Majority of the people are Moslem but there is already a Christian Community too. The interaction among the people from different religions is relatively good.

- Most of them work as non-formal workers e.g. trash collector.

- Most of the housewives are not working

There are already 2 local staffs who maintain a Christian fellowship there. There is Tuesday School for children, Saturday Youth Ministry (attended by ± 15 teenagers) and Bible Study for adult people. There is also Christian Women Fellowship every Saturday at 4 o’clock.

There have been 10  housewives taking part in this project. Each housewife involved in this project has average 3 to 6 children. They are already taught to create a Cross-key-chain.

For every 5 Cross-key-chain created and sold, we can buy them a box of milk @150gr. A box of milk can supply 5 glass of milk to each child. Thus it can provide them with 5 days additional nutrition (in assumption 1 family 1 children).
